Why this site exists
Equipment brochures are full of ratings. Utility bills are full of totals. The useful answer—what a specific piece of equipment costs to operate, or what it takes to keep a house running during an outage—is usually buried in the middle.
Utility Math was created by Gary, a utilities maintenance professional with hands-on experience around industrial utility systems, boilers, refrigeration equipment, generators, electrical loads, pumps, and mechanical systems. Before that, he spent fourteen years hauling oversize and overweight specialty equipment in the oilfield.
Gary is also Generac certified. Utility Math is independently operated and is not owned, sponsored, or endorsed by Generac or any equipment manufacturer.
Design and development
Utility Math is designed by Gary and Quinnlan Rae. Quinnlan Rae is the AI-assisted design and development collaborator behind the site’s interface, calculators, and written drafts. Gary provides the field experience, technical judgment, and final direction. Every technical claim is intended to remain traceable to visible assumptions, manufacturer information, or practical experience.
Our standard
We show the assumptions. Calculators are based on the numbers you enter, and sample figures are labeled as estimates. Manufacturer specifications, nameplates, qualified site evaluations, and applicable codes always take priority.
Corrections
Equipment changes and mistakes happen. If a calculation or explanation needs correction, email corrections@utilitymath.com. Treat every result as a planning estimate rather than engineering or installation advice.
