Heating comparison

Space heaters aren’t free heat.

Compare the electricity used by one or more resistance heaters with your central system. Enter actual power and runtime for a fair comparison.

This compares electrical consumption, not equal heat delivery. A central system heats more space; a space heater may make sense when it lets you heat only one occupied room.

Space heaters$118.80
Central system$86.63

Lower estimated electric cost

Central system

Estimated difference: $32.18 per month.

The comparison must use equal conditions

Electric resistance heat converts electricity to heat at the point of use, but multiple 1,500-watt heaters add up quickly. A heat pump can move more heat per unit of electricity, while a gas furnace uses a different fuel and still requires blower electricity.

Safety matters: portable heaters are high-current loads. Follow the manufacturer’s clearances and connection instructions; never use damaged cords or an undersized extension cord.
