Start with a water test
Hardness is commonly reported in grains per gallon (gpg) or milligrams per liter (mg/L) as calcium carbonate. If your report uses mg/L, divide by 17.1 for an approximate gpg value. Test iron, manganese, pH, and other local concerns too; they can change the correct treatment method.
1. Estimate daily water use
A generic per-person estimate is a starting point. A water-meter history is better. Divide a representative billing-period total by the number of days, and separate outdoor irrigation if it will bypass the softener.
2. Adjust the planning hardness
Dissolved ferrous iron consumes softening capacity and can foul a softener. Dealers and manufacturers use different compensation rules, so UtilityMath exposes the factor instead of hiding it. The calculator defaults to five additional gpg for each ppm of iron, but you should replace that assumption with the equipment maker’s guidance.
3. Calculate working capacity
Multiply daily treated gallons by adjusted hardness to get daily grain demand. Then multiply by the desired days between regenerations plus a reserve allowance.
A demand-initiated control tracks water use and reserves capacity before regeneration. One Pentair manual uses people × 70 gallons as a suggested reserve method; actual controls and settings differ, so follow the manual for the specific valve.
4. Don’t confuse nominal and efficient capacity
The model’s advertised “grain” size is often based on maximum laboratory capacity. The usable programmed capacity depends on resin volume and salt dose. More salt per regeneration can produce more capacity, but usually fewer grains removed per pound of salt. Compare the manufacturer’s capacity-and-salt table at the setting you intend to use.
When the simple calculation is not enough
Get treatment advice for substantial iron or manganese, low or high pH, sulfur odor, sediment, tannins, bacteria, nitrate, arsenic, saltwater intrusion, or other health-related contaminants. A softener exchanges hardness ions; it is not a universal water purifier.
Penn State Extension notes that softening may not be necessary at lower hardness levels and that using a softener for iron removal depends on water conditions. That is why the calculator presents a planning result rather than a purchase verdict.
