A nominal grain label is not guaranteed usable capacity. Verify the manufacturer’s capacity at your intended salt dose and confirm service flow rate for simultaneous fixtures.

What the result means

The calculator estimates how many hardness grains the softener should remove over your chosen regeneration interval, plus reserve. That number is a working-capacity target. It is not permission to buy solely by the large nominal grain number on a product listing.

Daily demand = people × gallons per person × adjusted hardness

Manufacturers publish different usable capacities at different salt doses. A system can also have enough grain capacity but still restrict flow when several fixtures run. Check both the certified or published capacity table and continuous service flow rate before purchasing.

Iron changes the treatment decision. The iron adjustment here is only a planning factor. High iron, manganese, low pH, tannins, sediment, sulfur odor, or bacteria may require pretreatment or a different process. Have the water and equipment selection reviewed when those conditions are present.
