Cheaper is not automatically correct. Changing the salt dose changes usable capacity. A lower dose may require more frequent regeneration. Compare each dose with the manufacturer’s capacity table and make sure it still covers your calculated grain demand.

The math

Regenerations per year = 365 ÷ days between regenerations
Annual salt = regenerations × pounds of salt per regeneration
Annual water cost = regenerations × regeneration gallons ÷ 1,000 × local rate

Use actual settings when possible

Calendar days are a planning shortcut. A demand-initiated softener regenerates after a programmed amount of capacity is used, so its real interval can move with household water use. Look through the controller history, note the dates of several regenerations, and average the intervals for a better estimate.

Salt price also varies by product. Use the shelf price before sales tax and match the bag weight. Potassium chloride and specialty salts can cost materially more than ordinary sodium chloride pellets or crystals.
